WHY FOREST SCHOOL IS SO IMPORTANT This is a wonde WHY FOREST SCHOOL IS SO IMPORTANT This is a wonderful yet slightly depressing poem called Wild Child by Jeanne Willis. The statistics back up these claims and year on year we are seeing less and less children playing outside and preserving their wild. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The rise in forest school and other outside based initiatives has grown exponentially in just the last few years. The importance of encouraging and providing opportunities for children to be children and be outside playing and getting muddy is increasing. Most primary schools (in my area of the UK - I can’t vouch for elsewhere) have ensured that some form of outdoor learning or forest school is now part of the curriculum. When we were children initiatives like this weren’t needed. We as children had space both physically in the environment but also space in our ‘childhood schedules’ for unstructured play outside, away from screens. Childhood for this generation's children looks very different. We need to show children the joy and wonder they get from being outside, interacting with nature in a free and unrestricted way. Forest school allows space for this. By introducing and nurturing this from a young age, this connection to the outside is strengthened and as they grow older they will choose to spend time in nature more often. The list of benefits to a child’s mental and physical wellbeing is long and I’m sure you know many of them. There is no better time than now to start changing the narrative and keep that wild in your child for as long as you can. Because nature in January teaches resilience, patience, and grit. Kids learn to move their bodies to stay warm, notice the quiet beauty, and discover what they’re capable of even when it’s uncomfortable. 🌬️✨ Fresh air, real challenges, and open space help regulate big emotions and build strong, confident humans — no matter the weather. Winter is tough on our feathered friends ❄️🐦 When the ground freezes and food is scarce, a simple bird feeder can be the difference between survival and struggle. Feeding birds in winter helps them keep their energy up, stay warm, and make it through the cold months. I’m stickman, I’m stickman, I’m stickman that’s me I’m stickman, I’m stickman, I’m stickman that’s me! It was our first week back at Forest School after over a month off and what a good week we had! The children spent the session getting creative with sticks and making a whole crowd of stickmen and stick lady loves! First designing and creating their amazing stick people and then storytelling in our very own Stickman Theatre. It was such a beautiful session. Taking controlled risks and using the right tools Taking controlled risks and using the right tools with toddlers isn’t reckless — it’s powerful 🌱 For the majority of our families that attend our setting it will be the first time they have experienced using tools with their little people. We have the perception that using anything that may cause harm is not a good idea with a toddler. And I totally see where this idea comes from. However, introducing the opportunity to take controlled risks is so important for healthy development and is something we promote at Kingfishers Forest School.  When little ones climb, saw, drill (with supervision), or try something new, they’re building confidence, problem-solving skills, and body awareness. Safe risks teach them “I can try, I can learn, and I can do hard things.” 🧠✨ With guidance and age-appropriate tools, toddlers develop independence, focus, and respect for safety — not fear. We’re not removing limits; we’re teaching them how to navigate the world with curiosity and care ❤️ Let them try. Let them saw. Are you looking for something to do with your litt Are you looking for something to do with your little one this January? There are still a few spaces in our 4 week winter term starting next week! Mondays 9.15am - 10.30am 11am - 12.30pm Thursdays 9.15am - 10.30am 11am - 12.30pm January is the hardest time to get outside so let us help you! Everyone feels better once they have had a bit of time out in nature, getting active and breathing in the fresh air. Our sessions are run with plenty of covered areas to keep you out of the elements (if wanted) and every week we finish around a cosy fire where we share a campfire snack and songs together. If that’s not the perfect way to get outside in winter I don’t know what is! The children had a wonderful time using leaves, moss and other natural resources to create their own brushes and then they got to try them out on the giant canvas to create a collaborative artwork. We saw lots of amazing fireworks rockets being made and played with along with beautiful chalk fireworks drawings. The children used chalk to create their stripy badger! The children got creative and we even had an "alien badger" and a "leaf badger". The children loved cuddling our soft badger cuddly and taking it for an adventure round the forest and we finished our session with a badger song and badger toast around the fire.
